HARTMAN Martha Matilda
Birth: 9 Jun 1819 N.Y.
Death: 4 Aug 1906 Stanwick, N.J.
Burial: Trinity Episcopal Churchyard, Moorestown, N.J.

Notes
After Edmund died, she lived with her youngest daughter (great grandmother of Betsy
Woodard) in Charleston, SC, then "her latter days were passed with her elder daughter
Mrs. E. Randolph Maule (that's Caroline) at Stanwick, Burlington Co. New Jersey. In
her extreme old age she lost her sight." (from Betsy Woodard and her sister Marian
Henneman). Marian Henneman 330 W 56th St NY 10019

More from Betsy and Marian:
Elizabeth Frances Weyman Valk's "Family Ancestral Album" has sections
labeled Weyman, Oley, Holcombe, Grimes, Busbee, Tanner, Lynn, Hartman,
Lawrence, Penfold, Leverich, Way and Woodhull. Some are detailed, some
very brief, and Lynn is blank.

To summarize the Weyman portion:
It leads off with Abner Weyman, born in England January 1738. He and
his wife, Susan Oley, emigrated to New York in 1793 with two sons,
William and John (from Abner's earlier marriage), a daughter and two
sons by Susan Oley. Their daughter Jane died in England before the
family "came over." The album has reproductions of portraits of Abner
and Susan, painted in England.
This Abner's son, Abner Edmund Weman, dropped his middle name after his
father's death. He was born in England October 17, 1786 and became a US
citizen in 1809. He married Elizabeth Holcombe. Their son, Edmund
Holcombe Weyman, was born in Savannah in 1811. He married Martha
Matilda Hartman in 1835, and they had five children: Caroline, Edmund,
Robert, Cornelius and Elizabeth Frances. Our great-grandmother,
Elizabeth Frances, married Charles Valk in 1879. The album has
photographs of Caroline and of her son, Edmund Weyman Maule, daughters
Caroline, Elizabeth Frances, Julianna, Carrie and Randolph (together),
and also of Edmund's sons Edmund and Harold (together).

Two pages toward the end of the album show the line of descent from
Alfred the Great (!) to Elizabeth Frances Weyman (implicitly Caroline,
also) through her (and Caroline's) mother, Martha Matilda Weyman, in 35
generations. I'd forgotten about that claim.

Cousin Georgiana Colgate is listed as "my father's niece." Could be the
daughter of Edmund Weyman's sister Isabella.

Mr. Maule-

I have never done anything with genealogy, but in poking around on the
Internet yesterday I found your message about my ancestor Abner Weyman, whose
portrait, along with those of his wife and daughter Jane hang in my living
room and hallway. My sister and I are trying to find time to go through
family records left by my late mother (Elizabeth Holmes Henneman, daughter of
Elizabeth Weyman Valk Holmes of Charleston, SC) and I don't know at this
point how much information we have about Abner Weyman's ancestors, but we do
know something about the family line since he arrived in New York around 1800
(we also have his immigration document), and I have some recollection that
my grandmother had very old records that I haven't yet come across (though
I'm not sure of which branch of her family). It will take us some time, but
we will let you know what we find if you are interested.

My understanding is that Abner and Elizabeth Weyman were born in England and
emigrated to America from London. Their daughter Jane died in England at age
14 or so before they left. So I think your information about his place and
date of birth may be wrong.

Let me know what your interest is especially and we will see what we can find
for you. Again, this won't happen immediately as neither my sister nor I has
much leisure at the moment.

Cordially,

Elizabeth Woodard
