Note: William Bardolf, in the 26th of Henry III [1242], attended that monarch in person 
in the expedition which he then made into France. In the next year, he had livery of 
the honour of Wirmegay, which, during his minority, had been in the hands of Hubert 
de Burgh, Earl of Kent, and he subsequently obtained royal charters for markets and 
free warren throughout his different lordships and manors. In the 41st of the same 
monarch [1257], he attended the king in his expedition into Wales and was soon after 
constituted governor of Nottingham Castle. He was at the fatal battle of Lewes under 
the royal banner in 1264 and was there taken prisoner along with the king. He d. in 
the 4th of Edward I, anno 1275, and was s. by his son, William Bardolf. [Sir Bernard
