BARONY OF BARDOLF (I)

HUGH BARDOLF, of Wormegay, and Shelford, son and heir, born about 29 September 
1259. He had seizin of his mother's lands 29 November 1295. He took an active part 
in the French and Scottish wars, and was among the retainers of Henry (de Lacy), Earl 
of Lincoln, at Carlaverock. He was knighted. In addition to the irregular summons of 8 
June 1294, which would not serve to create a Barony, he was summoned to 
Parliament from 6 February 1298/9, to 2 June 1302, by writs directed Hugoni Bardolf, 
whereby he may be held to have become LORD BARDOLF.

He married, before 1282, Isabel, daughter and (15 February 1285/6) sole heir of Sir 
Robert AGUILLON, of Addington, Surrey, Watton at Stone, Herts, &c., by his 1st wife, 
Joan, one of the seven daughters (and coheirs of the 1st wife) of William (DE 
FERRERS), EARI, OF DERBY. He died September 1304. His widow, who was born 25 
March 1257/8, had livery of Ruskington, co. Lincoln, 15 October 1304, and was of 
Addington in 1316. She died shortly before 28 May 1323. [Complete Peerage I:417-18,

Hugh Bardolf, in the 2nd of Edward I [1295], had summons, with other emminent 
persons, to attend the king, to advise upon the affairs of the realm and was 
subsequently summoned to parliament as Baron Bardolf, from the 6th of February, 
1299 (27th Edward I), to the 2nd of June, 1302. He m. Isabel, dau. and heiress of 
Robert Aguillon,* by whom he had two sons, Thomas and William. His lordship, who 
was employed in the French and Scottish wars of this reign, d. in 1303, and was s. by 
his elder son, Sir Thomas Bardolf, K.B.

* In Gibson's Camden's Britannia, it is stated that Sir Robert Aguillon had a castle at 
the manor of Addington in Surrey, which was holden in fee by the serjeantcy, to find in 
the king's kitchen, on the coronation day, a person to make a dainty dish called 
"Mapigernoun, or Dillegrout," and serve the same up to the king's table. This service 
has been regularly claimed by the lords of the said manor and allowed at the
