WOTTON UNDERWOOD,

Though the tradition that a Grenville was lord of Wotton before the close of the 11th
century seems to be without foundation, it is likely that the connexion of this family
with the parish began at an early date. Gerard de Grenville, who held three knights'
fees of the honour of Giffard in 1166, died in or before 1184, when 100 marks were
due from his nephew for his lands in Buckinghamshire. This nephew was probably
Eustace de Grenville, who was succeeded by Richard de Grenville mentioned in
connexion with Wotton in 1213 and alive in 1236. His son Eustace de Grenville was in
possession in 1255 and in 1284.

NOTE: So Gerard was involved in both Wotton & Chilton, but none of the names of the
sons subsequently involved with Chilton (Robert, Gerard, John) were mentioned in
Wotton, so the manors went to separate branches of the family, probably through a
brother of Gerard. Wotton descended from many generation in the Grenville family,
whereas Chilton for only a few, ending with John in 1302. I assume that Gerard was
the eldest son and Robert was his eldest son, since Robert was offered the lands in
Normandy by the King of France when the Norman Grainville/Grenville family died out
in 1225.
