Grainville-laTeinturiere: Seine-Inferieure, arr. Yvetot, cant. Cany.

In 1166 Gerard de Grainville held three knights' fees of the old feoffment of the Giffard 
honour of Buckingham. In the Conqueror's reign, Ralph de Granvilla witnessed a 
charter of Walter Giffard for the abbey of Cerisy-la-Foret; and the family split into two 
branches, Norman and English, both under-tenants of Giffard. Charters for Longueville 
priory show that successive heads of the Norman branch were named Eustace. 
Eustace seigneur of the Grainville's gift of the church of that place was confirmed by 
Hugh archbishop of Rouen to the abbey of St-Wandrille between 1142 and 1146; and 
the fact that thereafter the abbey had the church of Grainville-la-Teinturiere proves 
the identification. That the Norman and English families were of the same stock is 
shown by a charter of Louis VIII of 1225 allowing Robert de Grainville to succeed to 
Grainville on the extinction of the Norman branch, notwithstanding that his father 
Gerard had died in England.

The West country Granvilles are quite distinct from the above family. As they first 
appear as tenants of the honour of Gloucester it is probable that they came from 
Western Normandy, but their place of origin has not been determined.

NOTE: So Robert left England for Normandy in 1225 (Normandy had separated during 
the reign of John, and was then under the King of France). I don't think that Robert 
could have held lands in both Normandy & England simultaneously, as the 2 kingdoms 
were in constant conflict. There must have been another son Robert who held it in 
1236, and in 1244 the main manor of Chilton was taken away and granted to Paul 
Pever/Peyvre, leaving a manor of Chilton valued at 1/2 knights' fee held by the 
remainder of the Grenville family.
