made declaration of intent Oct 31, 1877, took oath of allegiance Sep 1, 1880 (per
ancestry.com record of Phila 1789-1880 Naturalization records)
1880 census has a Geo H b 1852/3 cigar maker, son of Michael. Siblings Mary K(24),

The 1910 Penna Miracode index shows him as head of household, living in Delaware

In 1871 English census, there is
Michael Foley age 55 (b 1816) born in London, England living 123 Rathbone Street, in
Liverpool
his wife is not listed. So is she dead? Yes, he is a widower
They are in St. Mark parish. in the Mount Pleasant area of Liverpool
children: Mary K Foley b Ballina, Ireland age 17 (b 1854), a son, name unclear (no, I
can read the original, it is Eugene), age 15 (b 1856), Robert age 13 (b 1858), Francis
age 11 (b 1860), Margaret age 8 (n 1863). All children born in Ballina, Ireland except
Margaret (b in Liverpool). This suggests that George, the oldest son, had gone ahead
to the US! BUT NO, he did not arrive until 1877. Michael is shown as a joiner and
marine store dealer, and as nearly blind. He is a widower. His son Eugene is a marine
store dealer assistant.
The only female Foley who died between 1863 and 1871 in Liverpool is Margaret
Foley, d Jul/Aug/Sept 1868, age 50. (There is another Margaret Foley who died at the
same time but b c 1824).
Could Michael be the Michael Foley who 31 Jul 1843 md Peggy Carty (note dtr name
Margaret) at St Chad, Rochdale, Lancashire, England? per familysearch
Or who md Margaret Sullivan 3 Dec 1849 in Ireland?
Francis Foley b recorded in qtr book for Dec 1860 in Manchester (per ancestry.com
records), Mary in qtr book for Sept 1856 in Manchester
1900 census says he is born in Ireland (OK) as are his parents (huh? Isn't Michael
born in London????) living on "56th to 59th and Elmwood" no house number.
George H Foley Feb 1853 md 19 yrs 13 chi, 12 alive came to US 1880
Mary F b Dec 1860 England as are parents, came to US 1868
Eugene Apr 1884 all ch b Pa
Alfred Feb 1886
Marie Apr 1887
Theresa May 1888
Walter July 1889
Howard Feb 1893

Irish naming conventions from www.billcarney.com/brickmasons/genmisc/naming.htm
says that 1st son named after father's father, 2d son after mother's father, third after
father, fourth after father's eldest brother, 5th after mother's eldest brother; 1st dtr
named after mother's mother, 2d after father's mother, 3d after mother, 4th after
mother's eldest sister, 5th after father's eldest sister.
So, here, parents of Michael Foley would be Eugene and Margaret Foley and parents
of the unknown mother would be Robert and Mary whomever. The unknown mother
would be ... no third dtr!
Oct 2006 research: There are some Michael Foleys in 1841 UK census but none fit
with definiteness (bplace, occupation). 1851 nothing even close.
Ballina is in Kilmoremoy Civil Parish, County Mayo
On www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/mayo/kilmoremoy.htm, Michael Foley is listed as on
Knox Street in Kilmoremoy, in the Griffiths Valuation of Ireland. On
www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/mayo/kilmoremoy.htm there are two Michael Foleys,
one on Abbey Street and one on Breaghwy. But that one is Co. Sligo, not Mayo, and
not Ballina.
At www.celtcousind.net/ireland/1846ballina, Michael Foley is listed as a carpenter at
Bridge Street. and also as a baker
According to 1930 census for son George, he is born in Irish Free State and Mary is
born in England
