Services will be private for James R. Conant, a former Boston 

Globe reporter who died Monday in the VA Medical Center here after a long illness. He 
was 58. 

Mr. Conant began his career as a newspaperman with the Boston Globe in 1945. In 
1947 he joined Time magazine in Detroit and later Quebec where he was editor of the 
Canadian edition of Time until 1957. He worked for various Canadian and American 
publications as a political reporter and was the chief editorial writer for the Baltimore 
News-American until his retirement three years ago due to poor health. He also did 
freelance work for many publications, including the Atlantic Magazine. 


Mr. Conant was a Navy veteran of World War II and served with the submarine 
service in the Pacific as a lieutenant, receiving a number of decorations including the 
Silver Star. 

He was born in Cambridge and was graduated from Phillips Andover Academy and the 
University of Michigan. 

Mr. Conant leaves two daughters, Norice Clark Conant of San Francisco and 
Constance Richards Conant of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a son, Daniel J. Conant of Santa 
Rosa, Calif.; a brother, Theodore R. Conant of New York City; and his mother, Grace 
(Richards) Conant of Hanover, N.H. His late father was James B. Conant, former
