Rex Stowers Clements Jr., 60, an endocrinologist, teacher and researcher who worked
toward a treatment for diabetes and its complications, died of cancer Sunday at the
University of Pennsylvania Hospital. He lived in Pineville, Bucks County.
Dr. Clements was senior vice president of clinical and medical affairs since 1994 for
Exocell Inc., a West Philadelphia company engaged in developing a treatment for
diabetes. He joined Exocell after seven years as vice president of medical affairs and
diabetes at Novo-Nordisk Co., a Denmark company also engaged in diabetes
research.
``Dr. Clements was a caring physician and accomplished scientist whose professional
contributions to the field of diabetes earned wide respect,'' said Margo P. Cohen,
president and scientific director at Exocell. ``He had a lifetime professional interest in
unraveling the causes and complications of diabetes, and has spearheaded
investigation of new drugs to prevent them.''
Before entering private industry, Dr. Clements taught for nearly 20 years, until 1984, at
the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and at the University of Alabama,
Birmingham.
At his death, he was a professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School
of Medicine.
Dr. Clements authored more than 150 articles on diabetes, endocrinology and
biochemistry and served on the boards of journals and associations related to the
disease.
He worked on diabetes-prevention studies sponsored by the federal government, and
was on numerous panels of the National Institutes of Health studying the ramifications
of diabetes.
Born in Bryn Mawr, Dr. Clements graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1960 from
Amherst College and a medical degree in 1964 from Penn's medical school. He
enjoyed gardening, reading and traveling.
Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Anne Whitney Clements; two sons, George and
Nicholas; three daughters, Bradley, Gail Redpath and Leslie Haddow; and five
grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at St. Thomas Church, Bethlehem
Pike and Camp Hill Road, Whitemarsh. Burial will be private.

Deborah Bradley Clements is his dtr by his first wife who became Mrs John C Bennett:
obit of Rex Stowers Clements
http://www.nytimes.com/1989/10/08/style/bradley-clements-wed-to-j-s-moore.html
says she is dtr of Dr Rex S Clements Jr of New Hope and Mrs John C. Bennett Jr. of
Wyndmoor, Pa. So ... is she a dtr of Anne Lloyd Whitney? NO ... born before her
father married his second wife.
Published: October 08, 1989 (so she is b 1962)
Deborah Bradley Clements, a daughter of Dr. Rex S. Clements Jr. of New Hope, Pa.,
and Mrs. John C. Bennett Jr. of Wyndmoor, Pa., was married yesterday to Jonathan
Scott Moore, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter B. Moore of New York and Sergeantsville,
N.J. Judge Kenneth C. MacKenzie of Superior Court in Morristown, N.J., performed the
ceremony at Round Hill Farm, the bridegroom's parent's home in Sergeantsville.
The bride, 27 years old, is known as Bradley, and she will keep her name. She was
until recently a law clerk for Judge Harold H. Greene of Federal District Court in
Washington, and next month she is to join the Washington law firm of Miller, Cassidy,
Larroca & Lewin as an associate. She graduated from Amherst College and received a
J.D. degree from Yale University. The bride's father is a vice president of medical
affairs at Squibb-Novo Inc. in Princeton, N.J. Her stepfather is a partner in the
Philadelphia law firm of Drinker, Biddle & Reath.
His father was pastor of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church
Per pub rec on ancestry, his dtr Leslie was b 17 May 1966, so, she, too is not a dtr of
Anne Lloyd Whitney
I think his son Nicholas is the one b 15 May 1963 (Nicholas J, in Allentown).
And neither is Gail (md to Bruce L Redpath, then to a Russell) Anne's dtr:
obit of Rex Stowers Clements
on Radaris, a Bruce Redpath shows up as 41 (b 1969), related to Deborah L Redpath,
Frederick L Redpath(his father, per his father's NYTimes obit), and Gail Clements
Russell
per veromi she is 47 (b 1964)
And I'll guess that son George also is not hers
