Gonzales Tribune, Thursday, July 7, 1927, front page:

"Pioneer Gonzales Man Passes After Brief Illness

The funeral of William V. Woodworth, retired pioneer farmer of Gonzales whose death
occurred last Thursday at Salinas, was held here Saturday from the home of his son,
M. H. Woodworth. Rev. Walter Fowler officiated at the services. The minister was
assisted by Mrs. M. A. Binn, Mrs. L. T. Herndon, Mrs. Walter Fowler and Diven
Cochran, who sang impressively "Beyond the River" and "Sometime We'll
Understand."

Following the services the remains were placed at rest in the Gonzales cemetery
beside the body of the deceased's wife, who passed away several years ago.

The pioneer Gonzales man was a resident here for the past fifty-two years. For many
years he farmed at his ranch in the foothills east of Gonzales. The well known rancher
was highly esteemed throughout this section. Reaching the age of 82 years and 3
months, he was one of the oldest residents of the township. Born at Elkhart, Indiana,
March 10, 1845, he came across the plains to California in 1860 at the age of 15
years. It was in 1875 that he settled in Gonzales.

The wife of the deceased preceded him to the grave several years ago. Besides the
many friends, he leaves to mourn his passing, six children, three sons and three
daughters. The sons are Clarence W. Woodworth of Palo Alto; Leslie E. Woodworth
and M. H. Woodworth of Gonzales; and the daughters: Mrs. Minnie Elliott of Ukiah;
Mrs. Emma Galloway and Mrs. Ray George of Hollister. He also leaves a sister, Mrs.
Heath Brooks, of Gonzales, and several grandchildren.

Mr. Woodworth had been ill only a short time, and was taken to a Salinas hospital
shortly before his death. Up to this year he had always enjoyed excellent health during
his long life."
