Carol A. Stevens, 79, of rural Columbia City, died at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, August 31, 
2017 at her home. 

She was born February 14, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania a daughter of the late 
Albert J. and Lillian I. (Larken) Manfred. She graduated from Upper Darby High 
School, Drexel Hill, PA in 1956. She continued her education at Principia College in 
Missouri, then Butler University in Indiana and received her bachelor’s degree from 
Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, Virginia. 

On April 14, 1963 she was united in marriage to John R. Stevens. They made their 
home at McGuire Air Force Base, NJ and then Sacramento, CA, where she managed 
the family stateside while her husband served three tours in Vietnam. After her 
husband’s Air Force service, the couple lived in Rochester, NY; Pottsville, PA; Alma, 
MI; Carmel, IN; Sterling, VA; Fredericksburg, VA; and after retirement, she and her 
husband moved to Columbia City to live closer to their daughters and grandchildren. 
Mr. Stevens died April 19, 2016. 

A school teacher, she began her teaching career at McGuire AFB. She continued 
teaching kindergarten and 1st grade at Caroline County Public Schools and 
Spotsylvania County Public Schools in Virginia. She retired in 1987. Carol was also a 
very gifted piano player and musician. She was often responsible for organizing the 
school musical productions and programs. 

She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church and was active in the 
Women’s Club and Pioneer Club. 

She is survived by a son, John (Judy) Stevens, Richmond, VA; two daughters, Heather 
(Chris) Brown, Fort Wayne and Dawn (Matt) Boyd, Columbia City; grandchildren, 
Lauren Baber, Sarah, Emily and Jenna Stevens, Caroline, Matthew, Rebecca, and 
Steven Boyd; step grandchildren, Timothy and Kayla Vadasz; and a brother, Albert 
Manfred, Tempe, AZ.
