Dr. Eugene Christopher Tolomeo, 93, of Oakland, died peacefully at home on July 22,
2016 surrounded by his family. He was born (September 24, 1922) and raised in
Paterson, attended St. Peter's College in Jersey City, and served with the U.S. Army in
World War II. After graduating from St. Louis University Dental School, Gene
practiced in Totowa Boro for more than 45 years. While in St. Louis, Gene met his
future wife Annette (nee Maiorino). They married in 1952 and started their family in
Totowa, then moved to Franklin Lakes in 1962. Sharing a strong religious faith, a
deep love of family, and a commitment to serving others, Gene and Annette were
happily married for more than 55 years. Gene was a charter member and past
President of the Paterson Serra Club, and an active member of the Most Blessed
Sacrament parish in Franklin Lakes, serving as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and a
member of the Cursillo and Men's Cornerstone groups. The parish activity closest to
his heart was the MBS Breakfast Club, where he could be found serving pancakes,
greeting parishioners and telling jokes over the course of several decades. Gene was
a long-time volunteer at Eva's Kitchen, and regularly provided dental care to those
who could not afford it, including residents of La Paz, Bolivia in the early 1960's.
No one loved life more than Gene, who was always ready to watch the next big game,
spend a night with the "Poker Club," devour the newest mystery novel, or make a
quick run for hot Texas wieners. He was at his happiest surrounded by family and
friends, telling stories, enjoying food and drink, and planning his next trip, be it a
pilgrimage to Rome or a jaunt to Atlantic City with the Seniors Club.
Gene was predeceased by his beloved wife Annette in 2008. He was also
predeceased by his parents Anna and Chris Tolomeo, and an older brother, Victor. He
is survived by his dear sister Ann Tolomeo of Wyckoff, and by his children: Jodee
(Larry) Fink of Cresskill, Maria (Dennis) Carroll of Pompton Lakes, Therese Tolomeo
(Mark Sisco) of Franklin Lakes, Annette Tolomeo (Michael Tsubota) of Oakland,
Marianne Tolomeo (Paul Gioni) of Mahwah, Christopher Tolomeo (Linda Coletti) of East
Aurora, NY, and Dr. Eugene (Kate) Tolomeo of Rochester, NY. He is also survived by
nineteen grandchildren: Claire and Regina Fink; Sarah, Matthew and Andrew Carroll;
Thaddeus Weber, Theodore and Mark Sisco; Dr. Katherine (Kyle) Taljan, Elisabeth
and Alexandra Tsubota; Anna, Nick and Chris Gioni; Maia, Ella and Liza Tolomeo; and
Charlie and Harrison Tolomeo, as well as two great-grandchildren, Gian-na and
Athanasius. They will all miss their diner breakfasts and card nights with Pop-Pop, as
well as his unwavering attendance at athletic and school events far and wide. The
family would like to thank Elizabeth Kwapisz and Milka Jabulik for the loving care they
provided to Gene during his final years.
The family will receive friends on Monday, July 25, from 2-5 and 7-9 PM at Vander
Plaat Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes. A funeral
Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Tuesday, July 26 at Most Blessed Sacrament
R.C. Church, Franklin Lakes. Interment to follow at Christ the King Cemetery, Franklin
Lakes. For further information www.vpmemorial.com In lieu of flowers, the family
requests that donations be made to the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco, Mary Help
of Christians Academy, 659 Belmont Ave., North Haledon, NJ, 07058, who honored
Gene as their 2006 Man of the Year.
