Notes
1981 book:
In his youth, Isaac worked as a farm laborer. Later he worked as a janitor, contractor,
and gardener. For several years, Isaac was in a farming partnership with his father
Benjamin.
Harriet was a dressmaker.
Isaac left Pennsylvania and settled in Lake Forest, Ill., outside Chicago. In
1887, he moved to Evanston, Ill., where he became very well known. It is not clear
why Isaac left Pennsylvania; economic woes are one possibility, but also to be
considered is the fact that he left his sisters to take care of their father's farm and the
fact that his family, members of the Religious Society of Friends, were not very happy
that Isaac's wife was not a Friend. In addition, Harriet had been previously married,
but it is not known whether she was divorced or a widow; if the former were true it
would be an additional source of family consternation. Isaac's sister Jane kept a diary
of her life (see 1E967); on the day Isaac left she made an entry stating that he had
left for Chicago and never again mentioned him in the diary. There may have been
involved many factors that will never be known.
Isaac died at his home, 1027 Chicago Avenue in Evanston, Ill., of liver
cancer. Funeral services were held July 10, 1918, the Rev. George Whiteside of
Evanston officiating.
