Waleran de Beaumont [elder brother William, 3rd Earl of Warwick, dsp in the Holy 
Lands (15 Nov?) 1184], 4th Earl of Warwick; married 1st Margery, daughter of 
Humphrey de Bohun by Margaret, eldest daughter and ultimate coheir of 1st Earl of 
Hereford of the 1141 creation. The 4th Earl of Warwick married 2nd c1196 Alice, 
apparently daughter of Robert de Harcourt, of Stanton (subsequently Stanton 
Harcourt), Oxon, though, if so either Alice and the 4th Earl's marriage date of c1196 is 
far too early or her father's marriage date of c1200 is far too late, and widow of John 
de Limesy, and died 24 Dec 1203(?). [Burke's Peerage]

EARLDOM OF WARWICK (IV) 1184

WALERAN, EARL OF WARWICK, brother and heir, being 2nd son of the 2nd Earl. He 
was with Henry II at Geddington, Northants, February 1187/8, was present at the 
Coronation of Richard I at Westminster, 3 September 1189, and was with the King at 
Geddington later in the same month. In 1195 he paid 20 marks for livery of the 3rd 
penny of the pleas of co. Warwick, and in 1196 £100 to be allowed to return to 
England. In 1199 he swore fealty to King John and is said to have carried the right 
hand sword at his Coronation. He granted for his life to Hubert, Archbishop of 
Canterbury, the advowson of all the prebendaries of the collegiate church in Warwick; 
he was a benefactor of the Hospital of St. Michael, Warwick, of the nuns of Pinley, 
co. Warwick, and of those at Wroxall, Co. Warwick; and he confirmed the gift of his 
grandfather, Earl Henry, to Préaux.

He married, 1stly, Margery, daughter of Humphrey DE BOHUN, by Margaret, 1st 
daughter and eventually coheir of MILES (of Gloucester), EARL OF HEREFORD and 
CONSTABLE OF ENGLAND. He married, 2ndly, circa 1196, Alice, widow of John DE 
LIMESY, lord of Cavendish, Suffolk, daughter of Robert DE HARCOURT, of Bosworth, 
co. Leicester, and Stanton, Oxon., by Isabel, daughter and heir of Richard DE 
CAMVILLE, of Stanton. He died before 13 October 1204, it is said on 24 December

Note: Rosie Bevan has proposed that Waleran m. (1) Margery de Oilly, as outlined 
below:

Rosie Bevan, in May 2003, suggested an alternative reconstruction, in which 
Waleran's first wife was Margery, the daughter of Henry de Oilly by his wife Maud de 
Bohun (who was the daughter of Humphrey de Bohun (d. 1165)), and Philippe Basset 
was the only wife of Henry, and the mother of Thomas.

Note first that the parentage of Maud de Bohun, the wife of Henry de Oilly, is 
established by an inquisition taken in 1263, which found that Humphrey de Bohun, 
grandfather of the Humphrey de Bohun who was Earl of Hereford and Essex in 1263, 
gave Bradenham in free marriage with his sister Maud to Henry de Oilly [Rosie Bevan, 
quoting Calendar of inquisitions post mortem, vol. 1, no 558]. This shows that Maud 
must have been the daughter of Humphrey de Bohun (d. 1165), who married Margaret, 
the daughter of Miles of Gloucester, Earl of Hereford and Constable of England. [Some

Waleran de Newburgh, 4th Earl of Warwick. This nobleman, Dugdale says, "had much 
ado a great part of his time touching his inheritance; there starting up one who 
feigned himself to he his brother, Earl William, deceased in the Holy Land, which 
occasioned him no little trouble and vexation; so that it is thought by some that the 
grant which he made to Hubert, archbishop of Canterbury, then chancellor of England, 
of the advowson of all the prebendaries belonging to the collegiate church, in 
Warwick, to hold during his life, was to purchase his favour in that weight business." 
His lordship m. 1st, Margery, dau. of Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford, by whom 
he had issue, Henry, his successor, Waleran, and Gundred. He m. 2ndly, Alice, dau. 
of John de Harcourt, and widow of John de Limesi, by whom he had an only dau., 
Alice. The earl d. in 1205 and was s. by his elder son, Henry de Newburgh. [Sir
