He [Roger de Leyburn] married, by 20 March 1266/7, Idoine, younger daughter and 
coheir of Robert DE VIPONT or VESPONT, lord of Westmorland and hereditary sheriff 
of Westmorland, [who was in ward to his father)... He died before February 1283/4. 
His widow had seisin of her lands 1 April 1284, when she was aged 22 or 25. She was 
summoned for military service in 1291, 1294, 1297 and 1300, as Idonea de Leyburn. or 
Domina de Leyburn. In August 1297 she became one of the coheirs of Richard 
(Fitzjohn), Lord Fitzjohn, who had great estates in England and Ireland. She married, 
2ndly, soon after 6 April 1301, Sir John de CROMWELL, who was living 15 October 
1335. She died 10 or 12 November 1333, apparently s.p.s. She had sold the reversion 
of her lands to the Despensers in 132O-21. [Complete Peerage VII:642-3, (transcribed

Pendragon Castle, Mallerstang, East Ward, Westmorland:

The Norman castle of Pendragon is supposed to have been built about the year 1180, 
but the most authentic mention that we have of a stone castle here is in the year 
1314. The jurors at the Inquisition p. mortem of Robert de Clifford found that there is a 
castle of stone in Mallerstang called Pendragon, held by Andrew de Harcla by 
payment of a yearly rent of 6d. Roger, his son, being then 15 years old, the custody of 
the castle was committed by Edward 11 to Guy de Beauchamp, earl of Warwick. 
Roger coming of age, was drawn into that conspiracy which Thomas, earl of 
Lancaster, formed against the king, and, being taken a prisoner was beheaded at 
York. The Inquisition p. mortem taken at his death in 1327 found that he died 
possessed of this castle of Pendragon, together with the Forest of Mallerstang, also 
that the buildings in the castle could not be extended, for that the cost of maintaining 
the same exceeded the profits thereof. The fortunes of the castle, however, were 
resuscitated when the twice widowed Idonea came into residence, indeed it seems to 
have risen to the zenith of its glory during her time. The Lady Anne in her Memoirs of 
the Clifford family tells us that "Pendragon castle was Idonea's chief and beloved 
habitation." Here, in the year 1333, she entertained Balliol, king of Scots, and here 
also she died, aged 73.

The following shows how the Vipont/Veteriponte inheritance was divided initially:

After Robert de Veteripont died from his wounds received in battle, 1264-5, fighting on 
behalf of the earl of Leicester and the barons against Henry 111, the king seized his 
vast possessions, but, on the intercession of Edward his son, he restored them to 
Robert's two heiresses—Isabella a girl of ten years and Idonea of six or seven years of 
age. The king, however, by reason of their youth, committed them to the custody of 
his two influential friends—Roger de Clifford of Clifford Castle in Herefordshire and 
Roger de Leyburn of the county of Kent. And with heiresses in their wardship, holding 
such vast possessions, it was only natural that marriages to their respective heirs 
would be arranged quickly.

In the meantime the two guardians endeavoured to come to an agreement as to the 
division of the estates between the two girls, an agreement that was confirmed when 
Roger de Clifford, the younger, married Isabella. They were to have the manor of 
Brougham; a moiety of the manors of Marton, Appleby, Winton and Brough; a moiety of 
the forests of Whinfell and Mallerstang; three parts of the manor of Meaburn Regis 
and a moiety of the profits of the Sheriffwick.

On the other hand Idonea was to have the castle of Brough; a moiety of the four 
manors as above; the manor of Kirkby Stephen; the castle of Mallerstang; a fourth part 
of the manor of Meaburn Regis, a moiety of the two forests as above; and a moiety of 
the profits of the Sheriffwick. That Idonea was to have the two castles of Brough and 
Mallerstang seems to imply that Isabella was to have the two castles of Appleby and 
Brougham.
