Robert de Hilton was born before 1385, son of William and Denise de Hilton. He 
married Maud de Clifford, daughter of Roger de Clifford and Maud de Beauchamp and 
they had a son -

SIR ROBERT HILTON, of Hilton, de jure, according to modern doctrine, LORD 
HILTON [c], son and heir, aged 50 and more at his father's death. In 1412 he, who 
was then a knight, and his brother Thomas received a pardon for inciting to the 
murder of John Duckett at Sunderland. From 1429/30 to 1437 he was a commissioner 
of array, and a surveyor of the streams, seeing to the observance of an Act for the 
removal of kiddles, weirs and other obstructions to navigation. On 9 September 1435 
the Bishop of Durham took his homage and fealty, and he had livery of his father's 
lands three days later. On 2 December 1443 he received a pardon.

He married, 1stly, shortly before 13 April 1398, Maud, daughter of Roger (DE 
CLIFFORD), LORD OF WESTMORLAND [LORD CLIFFORD], by Maud, 1st daughter of 
Thomas (DE BEAUCHAMP), EARL OF WARWICK. She died before 16 May 1442. He 
married, 2ndly, shortly before 27 April 1445, Elizabeth. She had married, 1stly, Sir 
Bertram MONBOCHER, of Sutton-on-Trent, Notts, Horton, Northumberland, &c., who 
died in September or October 1399; 2ndly (pardon for marrying without royal licence, 
16 November 1401] Sir William WHITCHESTFR, of Benwell and Seaton Delaval, 
Northumberland, who died 12 February 1407/8; 3rdly, in or before 1409, Roger DE 
FULTHORP ; and, 4thly, shortly before 4 October 1423, Thomas HOLDEN, sometime 
Steward of the Bishopric of Durham, who was living 2 May 1440. In 1446 Sir Robert 
Hilton and Elizabeth his wife held one-third of the manor of Seaton Delaval for the life 
of Elizabeth. Robert died 11 August 1448. His widow died 16 August 1450.
