Robert de Mohaut, of Howarden, succeeded c1141, died c1162, hereditary senschal 
of the Co of Chester; by Leucha, living 1162, perhaps daughter of William Fitz Neel of 
Halton, Constable of Cheshire. [Ancestral Roots]

ROBERT DE MOHAUT (de Monte Alto) or of Mold, cousin and heir. He was son of 
Ralph, dapifer or steward of Earl Hugh and his successors, which Ralph was brother 
of Hugh FitzNorman. He was known as "le Blakestiward" or Sir Robert de Mohaut the 
Black Steward. He defeated the Welsh, who were overrunning the Palatinate, 3 
September 1146, at Nantwich, and received various grants from the Earls of Chester, 
including Hawarden, which became the caput of the barony. In 1160 he was one of 
the farmers of the Earl of Chester's lands, and accounted as such up to 1162. 

He married Leucha (f), who survived him. He probably died circa 1162. [Complete

(f) It has been conjectured that she was a daughter of William FitzNeel of Halton, 
because Neston and other FitzNeel manors are found to have passed to the Mohaut 
family. Robert 'dapifer' was first witness of a charter by William II FitzNeel, Constable 
of Chester.

(g) By his wife Leucha he had sons Ralph, Robert, William, Ranulph and Roger of 
Elford.

Bailey Hill, opposite the 15th-century parish church at Mold is a good example of a 
Norman motte-and-bailey castle. The conical motte stands at one end of an oblong 
bailey, with a small outwork in front. A bowling green now occupies the bailey. Robert 
de Montalt may have raised the castle around 1140, but Owain Gwynedd captured it in 
1147. Minor royal expenditure is recorded from 1167, after Henry II recovered Mold. 
Stone walls found in the bailey perhaps belonged to this hall, but there is no later 
record of the castle.

NOTE: Since Mold was not built until c1140, Robert was obviously not born there, but 
I am representing him as born "of that area", as it is the earliest place name 
associated with him.
