refused to give allegiance to Abu Bakr fo rsix months, and gave it only after the 
martyrdom of his wife Fatima
Born into the Hashimid family of the Arabs
remained in the care of Muhammad. At the time of the Hijrah, he remained behind in 
Mecca in the prophet's place. In Medina he was made the Prophet's partner and 
brother in the new Muslim fraternity. He was the standard bearer of the Muslim Army 
and fought in almost all of the Prophet's battles. He was named succesor by 
Muhammad. He was killed by a Kharajide named Ibn Muljim. He is regarded as the 
First Imam by the Shias and as the 4th Caliph by all Muslims.
