Dear Group:

Perhaps it's the lateness of the hour, but I'm having a terrible time "translating" the 
Engaine pedigree as corrected by Keats-Rohan in Domesday People, p. 366. Can 
anyone help?

Since Vitalis Engaine, son of the Richard Engaine of 1086, accounted for part of the 
lands of William de Lisores in 1130 it is most probable that Vitalis was father of Fulk 
de Lisores by a daughter of William de Lisores. This Vitalis son of Richard was the 
same Vitalis who controlled the Pytchley fee of his uncle William Ingaine, as indicted 
by his account in 1129/30 to 'rehave' his land of Laxton (PR 31 Henry I 82). By a 
second marriage, to the daughter of Fulk the sheriff, Vitalis was father of Richard II 
Engaine of Pytchley. Thenceforth, the Abington fee descended with Fulk de Lisores 
and the Pytchley fee with Richard II Engaine.

This simple solution was, in fact provided long ago by Hugh Candidus, p. 61 
(Stapleton, 170 note), who wrote: Vitalis fuit pater Fulconis de Lisures, et Ricardi 
Engayne, qui genuit secundum Ricardum. The occurrence of both a Richard and 
Vitalis Engaine in the Northants Survey has confused the issue, since much of that 
document is anachronistic to its central date of c.1127 in referring back to Domesday 
Book or forward to a point in the 1170s.

Note: Apparently the Fulk de Lisores mentioned above is NOT the same as the Fulk de 
Lisoures, Domesday tenant of Sprotbrough, who is already in my ancestry.
