EARLDOM of CAITHNESS (III) 1080?

NORSE PREDECESSORS of the EARLS of ORKNEY - subject to King of Norway until 
after 1379

HAKON Paulsson was Regent of Orkneys and the Sudreys (? also of Caithness) for 
Sigurd Magnusson, Spring 1099 to (?) Spring 1105, when he went to Norway and was 
invested by King Sigurd I with the title of Jarl of Orkney. He was thus sole Jarl of 
Orkney until his first cousin Magnus Erlendsson secured investiture as Jarl of half 
Orkney from Eystein I Magnusson, co-King of Norway (1103-1122). At first the two 
cousins ruled together amicably and united against Duffnial, described as their second 
cousin, who "fell before them" ; but finally they quarrelled and Hakon took Magnus 
prisoner on Egilsay and put him to death (16 Apr. (?) 1117). Thereafter Hakon was 
sole Jarl of Orkney until his death (? 1126). The name of his 1st wife is not recorded. 
By her he had a son Paul the Silent. By his 2nd wife, Helga, dau. of Moddan of Dalr in 
Caithness, and sister of Jarl Ottar in Thurso, he had Harald I Slettmali (Smooth-
spoken) and two daughters. [Complete Peerage, X:Appendix A:17]
