SIR JOHN ENGAINE, of Laxton, Pytchley, Blatherwycke, and Bulwick, Northants, 
Great Gidding and Dillington, Hunts, White Notley and Colne Engaine, Essex, 
Hunsdon, Herts, &c., 4th son of Sir Viel ENGAINE, of the same (who died 22 October 
1248), by Rohese, his wife. He did service for the Abbey of Ramsey in the Army of 
Wales in 1245. He succeeded his elder brother, Henry (who died unmarried, 28 
January 1271/2, and had livery of his brother's lands, 23 February 1271/2. He was 
summoned for Military Service from 12 December 1276 to 16 December 1295, by writs 
directed Johanni Engayne or Engaygne. He did homage to the Abbot of Burgh in 1275. 
He was in the Army of Wales in 1287.

He married Joan, daughter and heir of Sir Gilbert DE GREINVILLE, of Hallaton, co. 
Leicester (who was living in 1243), by Joyouse, his wife. On 5 April 1274 he and his 
wife had livery of the manors of Prested and Theydon Garnon, Essex, and on 16 
August following of lands in Byfield, Northants, which she had inherited as heir of her 
mother, Joyouse de Muntfichet (h). He died 5 January 1296/7, and was buried in 
Fineshade Priory. His widow was living 2 November 1305. [Complete Peerage V:71-3,

(h) Joyouse had married, 2ndly, Richard de Muntfichet, of Stansted, Essex, who was 
dead sp., 22 Jan 1267/8.
