From Old Churches, Ministers and Families of Virginia, by William Meade (google 
books) page 370, has his epitaph [no it is epitaph of brother of Elizabeth Lucy Grymes 
yet account says that this John was married to Anne ... very confusing but see below], 
as Hon. John Grymes, Esq. served King George I and II in virginia, as supporter of 
Council of State, and Royal Prerogative, of the liberty and property of the subject. 
Served as Receiver-General. Patron and Visitor of College of William and Mary. 
Beneficient to all. died 2 Nov 1748, in 57th year of his age (so born 1691?) It appears 
that his father was also a John Grymes, and that this fellow was son of Thomas 
Grymes. Of John: came to Va. after fall of Cromwell. He and wife Anne lived in 
Middlesex near Piankstank, at Grymesby. Many descendants. Was vestryman until 
1708, when he withdrew, to old age, as he died not long after. Then the younger 
John, whose epitaph is given, born 1693, died in 1748 (so he would be a brother of 
Elizabeth). They think the first John also had a childd Charles. The second John and 
Lucy his wife had children born between 1720 and 1733: Lucy, Philip, Charles (d 
young), Benjamin, Sarah, Charles, Ludwell. many descendants. See this book and 
footnote for this family.
Addendum 22 Mar 2010 John Grymes who md Lucy according to this is son of John 
Grymes and Anne (not Alice). This John is not the one who died in 1748 (that John 
was born 1693 and who married Lucy).
Per Sir John Temple and Sir Henry Tichborne's The history of the general rebellion in 
Ireland, there was a Thomas Grymes, lieutenant to Sir Adam Loftus (apparently a 
Parliementarian). Others show dtr as Elizabeth Grymes (not Elizabeth Lucy), dtr of 
John and Alice, and John as dtr of Charles (b 1612 Ightham, Kent, d 1672 Gloucester 
Co) and Katherine (who is NOT Dedmen, b/c that was her 1st husband's name). 
familysearch record shows his father as John (not Thomas as another site does). John 
Grymes of Brandon has will with seal of Grymes family. So question 1 is who are his 
ancestors? Question 2 is whether Elizabeth is his dtr. The arms, according to Burke, 
are those of Grimes of Bonchurch, Isle of Wight. They are the same for Henry Grimes 
Esq of Cotton House, near Rugby, co. Warwick. He lived 19th c, son of Abraham 
Grimes. appears Grymes came to Bonchurch in the 19th c. [The Va arms of John who 
md Alice, Azure, 3 crosses taus, or, are the same as the Grymes families in the Warner 
Townley Grymes jstor article in ownanc folder] [That article also explains that Alice's 
will of 1709/10 does lists just John, Charles, and Ann. Yet Elizabeth is of Grymesby. 
Who is she? some records say her father is John and mother Ann. If so, it's a different 
John. Who?]

Elizabeth Lucy Grymes b 1692 in Grimesby, Middlesex Co. Va md John Holcombe. She 
is SISTER of Hon. Charles Grymes of Moratico, Richmond Co., and his wife Frances 
Jennings, the dtr of Gov Edmund Jennings and Frances Corbin, dtr of Henry Corbin,

Charles Grymes is son of the Major John Grymes who died 1708 (see epitaph above). 
He married Alice Townley, dtr of Lawrence Townley and Sarah Warner, dtr of 
Augustine Warner II, b 1642, d 1681, speaker of the House of Burgesses and member 
of the Royal Council, and his wife, (md 1665) Mildred Reade (b 1640, d 1694), dtr of 
Col George Reade qv who came to Virginia in 1637. Col. Reade was Secretary of the 
Colony and member of Royal Council, md Elizabeth Martian, dtr of Nicolas Martian qv. 
Augustine Warner II was son of Augustine Warner I, b 1610, d 1674, Burgess from 
England to Virginia in 1628, md Mary (b 1614, d 1662). Major John Grymes was a 
justice in 1706 and Receiver General of Virginia.

continuing, Maj John Grymes was son of Charles Grymes "the immigrant" and his wife 
Katherine. Maj John Grymes b c 1651 England, d 1709 Grymesby on the Piankatank in 
Middlesex Co., Va. Charles Grymes the immigrant is Rev. Charles Grymes, b 1612 
Ightham, Kent, d 1662 Gloucester, Gloucester Co., Va. He md Katherine as his 2d wife 
after 1657 in Va. (says b c 1600 and her children by first husband b 1620s so how can 
she be mother of a guy b c 1651 in england when she marries aft 1657 in Va.... so 
that's why this, too, is confusing)

Others say Thomas Grymes is the father of John. What a mess.

A descendant of Maj John Grymes, Lucy (dtr of Charles and Frances Jennings) married 
Henry Lee and is ancestor of Robert E Lee.

www.aylesworth.net confirms Maj John Grymes md Alice Townley. etc. Says his father 
is Lt. Col. Thomas Grymes, who came to Va. after 1642.
worldconnect.rootsweb Relatives of Ralph and Pat Roberts says Maj John Grimes b 
1651, d 2 Nov 1748 and is son of Rev Charles Grymes and Katherine Dedman, and 
that HE is the father of Elizabeth Lucy AND the father of Charles Grymes who md 
Frances Jennings. Says John md Alice Townley b 1645, and that his father was b 
1612. Says father of Rev Charles Grymes is Thomas Grymes. Makes sense, as it 
shows Lucy Grymes, dtr of Charles and Frances as marrying Henry Lee.

familysearch.org entry: John Grymes b 1651 London, son of Charles Grymes and 
Katherine Dedham. Says Charles and Katherine also had dtr Katherine Sarah Grymes, 
b 1635 Igtham, Kent, d 1700 Gloucester Va. Charle b 1612 Igtham, Kent, m 1653 
London (huh?), d 1672 Gloucester Va. Another record says John Grymes was a Major, 
and md Alice Townley, and that Charles is a Rev., and in turn is son of Thomas 
Grymes. Alice Townley dtr of Lawrence Townley and Sarah Warner.

The John Grymes who married a Lucy had these children, from 1718 to 1730: John, 
Lucy, Philip, Charles, Alice, Benjamin, Sarah, Charles, Ludwell. So this must be a 
BROTHER of Elizabeth Lucy Grymes? Per Va Vital Records, her tombstone says she is 
Lucy, widow of Hon. John Grymes, dtr of Hon. Philip Ludwell. She d 1749, b 1697. 
Per a Pedigree of Queen Elizabeth (book on ancestry.com), John Grymes of Grymesby 
md Alice Townley, dtr of Lawrence Townley and Sarah Warner, dtr of Co. Augustine 
Warner and Mary __. John and Alice are parents of Charles who md Frances Jennings.

Grymes and Elizabeth?
