ROBERT MARMION, son and heir. He witnessed several charters of Henry II between 
1174 and 1181. In October 1181 he completed his father's gift to Barbery Abbey. He 
took an active part in judicial affairs, occurring first as a justice of assize at Caen in 
1177. He acted as a justice in the King's court or as itinerant in several counties in 
England between the years 1184/5 and 1205, and was of the Barons' party against 
King John. He was Sheriff of co. Worcester between 1185 and 1189. At Michaelmas 
1194 he was acquitted of scutage in co. Lincoln by reason of his military service in 
Normandy.

He married, 1stly, Maud DE BEAUCHAMP (j). He married, 2ndly, Philippe. He was 
dead by 15 May 1218. In 1221 Philippe, as widow of Robert Marmion and mother of 
Robert the younger, claimed dower in Tamworth, Middleton, and Scrivelsby against 
her stepson Robert the elder, son of Robert by Maud de Beauchamp. [Complete

(j) Tamworth had been granted to William son of Walter de Beauchamp by the Empress 
Maud circa 1141. Round suggests that "in their rivalry for Tamworth, the Marmions 
embraced the cause of Stephen, and the Beauchamps that of Maud, their variance 
being terminated under Henry II by a matrimonial alliance." This alliance presumably 
took place before King Henry II's charter of 1155 to Robert Marmion the second, when 
his son Robert, afterwards the justice, could not have been more than a boy

NOTE: Alan Wilson, in a post to SGM 14 Apr 1997 based on several different 
authors/works, states that Robert's 1st wife (and mother of Robert "The Elder") is 
unknown, while Maud de Beauchamp was Robert's mother. I have opted to go with 
Alan's version as opposed to CP's above, even though the website "Some Corrections 
to CP" does not list Alan's information as a correction.

NOTE IN RESPONSE TO Curt Hofemann's post: Although Alan doesn't mention any of 
the descendants of Robert by his second wife Philippe, since Alan Wilson mentioned 
at the start of the post that "at least one of these Roberts had two sons named 
Robert", I believe that Alan still agrees with CP (and AR) in having Philippe being 
mother of a second "The Younger" Robert.

NOTE IN RESPONSE TO R.L. Samuell's post: I am changing my ancestry to agree 
with your post-em based on Alan Wilson's posting to SGM. CP, which provided the 
information above, assumed that Henry II before 1155, in order to resolve a feud 
between the two families (Marmion & Beauchamp), arranged the marriage between 
Robert Marmion's child (2-5 years old at the time--CP stated "could not have been 
more than a boy") and Maud de Beauchamp (who could have been approximately the 
same age if she were a late child, but does fit better with the earlier generation). Such 
arrangements for marriage between young children were fairly common--so certainly 
CP's assumption is not unreasonable.
