The eldest Sir Humphrey de Barenton succeeded his father in his estates and office, 
being then a minor and ward of King Henry the Second. He lived in the reigns of King 
Henry the Second, Richard the First, and John, and was Sheriff of Essex and 
Hertfordshire in the ninth year of Richard the First. He was a benefactor of Hatfield 
Priory, and it is singular that his gift of a rent charge of twelve pence per annum is the 
only one that can be traced from the Barrington family to that priory.

There is a very curious agreement (which unfortunately is so stained as to be illegible 
in some places) between Humphrey de Barenton and Alan de Sepere, by which 
Humphrey became security with Alan to Benjamin and his sister Cissorie, Jews at 
Cambridge, for the payment of two pounds per annum for eight years. The first 
payment to be at Michaelmas next after the marriage of Earl William to the daughter of 
the Earl of Albermarle. Alan de Sepere giving to Humphrey, as a security, a mortgage 
on all the fee Humphrey held under him ; so that should he, Humphrey, be called upon 
to pay any part of the debt, he should have full possession of the fee, without any 
restriction, until he was repaid all the money he had advanced. The Earl William 
named in this agreement, was the William de Mandeville, whose daughter Amicia 
Humphrey married, and the agreement refers to his, William's, marriage to his first wife, 
Haurse, or Aricia, daughter of William le Gros, Earl of Albermarle. Humphrey was 
knighted by King Henry the Second as was his brother Warin by King John. Warin and 
his younger brother Richard appear as witnesses to the above-named agreement with 
Alan de Sepere and their names are found to deeds relating to property in Hatfield.

Note: I have had to divide up the text of the source, because they get the Humphrey 
II & III mixed up, as well as William de Mandeville, the 3rd & the 6th Earl of Essex. 
Humphrey II made the above agreement with William de Mandeville, 3rd Earl of Essex, 
who CP states did marry Hawise (this says "Haurse or Aricia"), a daughter of William le 
Gros, Earl of Aumarle. His son Humphrey III m. Amicia, daughter of William de 
Mandeville, 6th Earl of Essex. The proof of this is that in the notes under Humphrey 
III, Amicia was daughter of William de Mandeville whose wife was "Christiana, 
daughter of Robert FitzWalter". According to the Complete Peerage, this was William 
de Mandeville, 6th Earl of Essex. In addition Humphrey II lived during the reigns of 
Henry II, Richard I, and John (as stated above); the person that married Amicia lived 
during the reign of Henry III, making him Humphrey III.
