from Ruthven Clan website:

Burke's Peerage reminds us that the Ruthvens were a pretty violent lot, as you might
expect from our beginning with a (Swedish?) Viking pirate, Sven, long about the
1100s, who pirated off the E. coast of Scotland. Tired of all that commuting, he
settled down in what was to be the St Andrews/Perth area and dispatched the natives
for trespassing on their own land. Sven wasn't clearly a born-again Christian, because
he named his son, Thor, after a Norse god, from whom we have the day, Thurs-day.
(Certainly the later "Christian" Ruthvens didn't behave much better than these guys.)

Thor, in turn, had three sons, one of whom took the name, "Ruthven," according to
one theory, from the land he lived on. The name, "Ros/rot-fen," means, according to
some, "red fen" or, "red swamp." Another theory is that it means "Ros/rot-sven" ("red
Swede") from the similar Norse (North)men believed to have been the "Rus" (the
Reds!--seriously), founders of Russia in the 8th/9th century.
