Haig, De la Haga, De Haga: The district of La Hague: Manch, arr. Cherbourg
(ie. La Hauge, Manche, Normandy)
[This article deals with the Haig family of Scotland, which was related to, and includes
much information on, the Morville family of Northern England/Scotland. See also notes
under son William de Morville of Bradpole for article on the Moreville family]

Hugh de Moreville witnessed charters of David earl of Hungtingdon, afterwards king of
Scotland, for St. Cuthbert's Durham, c. 1118, and the abbey of Selkirk (afterwards
Kelso), c. 1120. He subsequently became constable of Scotland and founded
Dryburgh abbey. He died in 1162 [NOTE: I follow a modified version of Turton which
has two different Hugh de Morvilles, the father presumably witnessing the early
charters, and the son (he has grandson) d. 1162.], and was succeeded by his son
Richard, who died in 1189. Richard married Avice, daughter of William de Lancaster,
and is the Richard de Moreville, who in 1166 held five knights' fees of Roger de
Mowbray, since Nigel de Mowbray confirmed to Furness abbey the land in Selside and
Birkwith, co .York, (West Riding), given by Richard de Moreville and Avice of
Lancaster, his wife. The family held lands in Northamptonshire, Huntingdonshire and
Rutland of the honour of Huntingdon.

Note: I have 3 sons for this Hugh, as founder of the family (more or less based on
Turton). Lewis Loyd would have another son, being the eldest, who stayed in
Normandy. This senior line of the family was mentioned in the article contained in the
notes for William de Morville of Bradpole, reflected in a Herbert de Moreville who held
1/6 of a knight's fee in Morevilla, Manche, Normandy under Richard de Vernon during
the reign of Philip Augustus (1212-20). Mr. Loyd would have this Herbert being
probably the eldest son of Hugh (or son of the eldest son).
