MAUTRAVERS

The ancestor of this family was undoubtedly Hugh, who held Lytchett (afterwards 
distinguished as Lytchett Mautravers [**Lytchett Matravers**], Woolcombe, and other 
mansions in Dorset and Wilts, land at Yeovil, etc., Somerset, and in Gloucestershire, 
from William, Count of Eu; in Somerset he also held Preston, etc. from Alfred de 
Ispania (Domesday). The pedigree of the family is obscure for several generations 
owing to the fact that, though they were large landowners, they did not hold direct of 
the Crown in any place. Records, even of Crown tenants, at this date are scanty; of 
records of the tenants of mesne lords there remains in comparison, almost nothing. It 
has hitherto been considered that the Domesday Hugh was the Hugh who granted 
land near Preston to Motacute Priory. For certain reasons it seems likely that the 
grantor was a Hugh of a later generation, as suggested in the chart pedigree. There 
are many evidences of the existence, in the next generation, of a Walter and a William 
Mautravers, who may have been sons of the second Hugh. The notices which have 
come down to us of William suggest that he was a younger son, or at least not 
occupied in his early years with the management of estates; between 1121 and 1133 
he witnessed a number of Henry I's charters, and appears to have been attached to, 
or to have followed, the Court, both in the King's Norman campaigns and later in 
England. He obtained from Henry I a grant of the Honour of Pontefract for 15 years, 
and of the widow of Hugh de Laval, its late owner; he was killed in the North in 1135, 
and seemingly dsp.

Walter Mautravers, his contemporary, has left much slighter traces in records that 
have come down to us, but his appearances are in connection with land, etc., in 
Berks and Dorset and his wife's inheritance in Leicestershire, and it would seem to be 
through him that the family was carried on. In point of time he is followed by (query his 
son and heir) John Mautravers, whom we trace by entries in the Pipe Rolls (Somerset 
and Wilts) 1158-1169. [Complete Peerage VIII:577-78]
