In 1082, the Vicomte of Albi, Nîmes and Béziers proclame himself Vicomte of
Carcassonne. This is Bernard Aton said "Trencavel" (from Occitan trenca beou =
trance bien : "cut well"). Although relative through his mother to the ancient dynasty,
which died off without leaving a direct descendant. Trencavel is not the legitimate
heir, but the house of Barcelone, who bought the rights of successin, can do nothing.
Bernard Aton imposed himself and create the Trencavel Dynasty, which ruled over Car
cassonne for nearly a century. The Vicomte of Carcassonne was definitively attached
to the crown of France in October 1247 after the "Cathare" crusade.

The Trencavels had descendants in Languedoc around Beziers and Nîmes.
