But dates of her children's birth makes it clear she is sister and NOT daughter of John 
Bardolph.

The following post to SGM, 10 Jun 2004, by Douglas Richardson casts doubt on the 
identification of his wife Margaret, as Margaret Bardolf apparently married a Kerdeston 
instead of Welles. @@check ancestry

Complete Peerage 12 Pt. 2 (1959): 440-441 (sub Welles) contains a good account of 
the life of Sir Adam de Welle, 3rd Lord Welles (died 1345). Regarding his marriage, the 
author states the following:

"He married before 1334, Margaret. She died before him and was buried in the Lady 
Chapel at Greenfield Priory aforesaid. He died 24-28 Feb. 1344/5 ..."

Elsewhere, page 441, footnote a, the author claims "Margaret may have been a da. of 
Thomas Bardolf, 2nd Lord Bardolf. See the 1st edn. of this work, vol. viii, Corrigenda, 
p. 525, and Misc. Gen. et Her., 5th series, vol. ix, pp.45-46."

The claim that Margaret may have been a Bardolf appears to rest solely on the weak 
evidence that Sir John Bardolf, son of Thomas, served as a godparent to Margaret's 
son, John de Welles, in 1352 (see page 441, footnote d). While godparents were often 
relatives in this time period, they weren't exclusively so. Sometimes they were close 
family friends, or, on occasion, they were important people in the area in which the 
parents of the child resided.

Curiously, evidence which disproves that Margaret de Welle is a Bardolf has been in 
print since 1826. In that year, an abstract of the will of Thomas Lord Bardolf's 
daughter, Cecily Lady Morley, dated 1386 was printed in Testamenta Vetusta 
[Reference: N.H. Nicolas, Testamenta Vetusta, 1 (1826): 121]. In her will, Lady Morley 
mentions her sister, Dame Margaret Kerdeston. Unless the abstract of this will is 
defective, it would appear that Lady Morley's will provides a separate history for her 
sister, Margaret, who married a Kerdeston.

If anyone has further particulars regarding this matter, I'd certainly appreciate hearing 
from them. This issue deserves further study.
