ROBERT DE NEVILLE, son and heir apparent by 1st wife, enhanced the territorial 
importance of the family by his marriage, about 1260, with Mary, elder daughter and 
coheir of Ralph FITZRANDOLF, of Middleham (i). He d. v.p., in 1271. His widow 
proffered military service in 1277, 1282 and 1310. She died shortly before 11 April 
1320, and was buried at Coverham. Abbey, the foundation of her ancestors, of which

(i) Whose 3 daughters: Mary abovenamed, Joan, wife of Robert de Tateshale, and 
Anastase, wife of John Hansard--with their husbands, were vouched to warranty in 
1271 by Anastase, widow of the said Ralph. Robert de Neville had seisin of his wife's 
pourparty under write of 28 Jun 1270. By his marriage he acquired Middleham; and 
ultimately all of the possessions of Ralph FitzRandolph in Yorkshire (and some in 
Norfolk) passed to the Neville family. May de Neville's pedigree is deduced by Gale, 
'Honor of Richmond', pp. 234-5, from Ribald, brother of Alan Rufus, Alan Niger and 
Stephen, Counts of Bretagne and Earls of Richmond. The pedigree as given in the 
history of the foundation of Coverham Abbey, written during the lifetime of Mary de 
Neville, appears to be more authentic than is often the case with such accounts.

Henry Drummond states: "In 1271, Robert was caught by friends of the husband of a 
lady in Craven, who inflicted on him their vengence in a mode intended to prevent 
forever repetition of this offense. He died from these wounds in the lifetime of his 
father"
