40-YEAR YELLOW CAB EXEC PETER AGNES: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Philadelphia Daily News (PA) - Tuesday, January 25, 1983
Deceased Name: 40-YEAR YELLOW CAB EXEC PETER AGNES
Peter L. Agnes, an executive with the Yellow Cab Co. for more than 40
years, died Friday. He was 90 and lived at the Presidential Apartments
on City Avenue.
Agnes, who began at Yellow Cab in the 1920s, held a number of
supervisory positions and was a traffic manager when he retired in the
early 1960s.
Yellow Cab accounting department employee Rose Buffington worked for
Agnes and knew him for many years.
"He was a great guy and very personable. He had friends all over the
city - cops, politicians," she said.
"His job was to handle any problems the drivers had and make sure
places like the Civic Center got covered.
"He was here so long, he could tell you anything about the company.
When he left, he kept in touch with everyone."
"He was the very precise and gentlemanly type you don't find very often
today," said his niece, Betty Agnes Tascione. "He had all the manners
and protocol - always a tie, careful with his clothing and hair
well-groomed.'
Agnes, originally from South Philadelphia near 15th and Morris streets,
was one of the original tenants of the Presidential Apartments when it
opened about 30 years ago.
After Agnes retired, Tascione said, he traveled extensively and made at
least two trips to Italy.
"He was very interested in his roots," she said. "He went to his
mother's hometown outside Naples and stayed over there quite a while.
"He had a full life."
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. tomorrow at St.
Thomas Aquinas Church, 17th and Morris streets. Burial will be in Holy
Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, Delaware County.
