Frank J. Rodia, 86, former professional golf instructor in San Diego and a sponsor of the annual San Diego
High School Golf Tournament, died of cancer June 15 in his Santa Rosa home. He and his wife, Thelma,
had lived there for the past 18 months.

He was the golf pro at Torrey Pines Golf Course from the time it opened in 1953 until he retired in 1970.

Prior to Torrey Pines, he was golf pro at Mission Valley Country Club from 1934 until he went to Flying Hills
Country Club in La Mesa. He was born in Seattle, Wash., in 1903 and in 1922 graduated from Ballard High
School. While a student at Ballard, he and a group of classmates challenged nearby Franklin High School
to a golf match. From that time, his wife said, he was active in promoting junior golf programs. He was a
sponsor for the annual San Diego High School tournament, and Mrs. Rodia said that the family plans to
continue the sponsorship.

Mr. Rodia was golf pro at several prestigious country clubs in Washington and Oregon before coming to San
Diego in 1934. He also played in many tournaments. He won the Washington State Open twice, the
Washington Professional Golf Association tournament twice, the Pacific Northwest PGA twice and the
California PGA Seniors championship. He had played in five national PGA championship tournaments and
three national opens.

Mr. Rodia was inducted into the Northwest PGA Hall of Fame in Portland, Ore., in 1982.

After retiring in 1970, Mr. and Mrs. Rodia built a home on the Hood Canal near Alderborrk Country Club, in
Washington, where he played golf and was active in senior affairs until they moved to Santa Rosa. In
addition to his wife, survivors include two children, James Rodia of San Diego and Donna Mani of Novato; a
sister, Peggy Farrell of Seattle, Wash., and three grandsons.

Memorial contributions in his name may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 2251 San Diego Ave.,
