N MEMORIAM

Nacque l’8 ottobre 1902 a S. Michele di Serino (AV) da Pasquale e Maria Cimminiello. 
Sin da bambino mostrò precoce attitudine ai lavori agricoli più impegnativi.
Nel giugno 1922 si arruolò nel Corpo della Guardia di Finanza, prestando servizio sino 
al giugno 1928 presso le Legioni di Cagliari, Roma e Napoli; fu obbligato a congedarsi 
per aiutare la famiglia nella coltivazione dei campi, essendo il padre Pasquale di 
nuovo emigrato negli Stati Uniti dove aveva lavorato per tre anni alla ricerca di miglior 
fortuna. Nel dicembre 1928 contrasse matrimonio con Carmela Vigorita, dalla quale 
ebbe sei figli: Pasquale, Antonio, Maria, Giovanna, Alba e Celestino.
La crisi economica mondiale che aveva investito anche l’Italia lo convinse nel 1933, 
con altri pochi sammichelesi, a partire in bicicletta alla volta delle Paludi Pontine, 
affrontando condizioni terribili di vita e di lavoro, ove il regime fascista intendeva 
trasformare quei territori infestati dalla malaria a nord di Terracina in terre coltivabili ed 
abitabili.
Rientrava a San Michele, sempre in bicicletta, ogni mese, per ritrovare la moglie con 
due figli in tenera età, percorrendo circa 430 chilometri tra andata e ritorno sul 
percorso Avellino-Napoli-Formia-Fondi-Terracina-Paludi Pontine. Così avvenne per tutti 
e tredici i mesi della sua permanenza in quei luoghi, riuscendo a risparmiare circa 
duemila lire. Anche in condizioni di estremo disagio l’agricoltore Salvatore Renzulli 
seppe offrire prova della sua maestria per tutti i lavori legati alla Madre Terra; difatti 
Mussolini, nel corso di uno dei suoi frequenti sopralluoghi nell’agro, apprezzò così 
tanto il lavoro svolto dalla sua squadra che volle conoscerlo personalmente per 
congratularsi e concedergli senza indugio un premio sulla paga.
Nel 1941 fu richiamato alle armi ma collocato in congedo avendo famiglia numerosa. 
Fu sindaco di S. Michele da dicembre 1946 a maggio 1952, continuando poi a far 
parte delle amministrazioni comunali per altri dodici anni. Uomo di spiccata 
intelligenza, di grande nobiltà d’animo e di forte carattere, mantenne gli impegni 
assunti con il suo nobilissimo discorso di insediamento. Lo caratterizzò la gentilezza e 
la disponibilità verso tutti i suoi concittadini, nessuno escluso, che gli si rivolgevano 
spesso per consigli. Fu per queste sue rare qualità che il popolo sammichelese 
identificò in Salvatore Renzulli il Sindaco per antonomasia, attribuendogli il nome che 
lo ha poi contraddistinto per tutta la vita, “Salvatore ‘o Sinnico”.
Nel 1946 gli fu conferito diploma di benemerenza dal Comitato Direttivo della rassegna 
“Albo d’Onore dell’Industria e Agricoltura Italiana della Ricostruzione” con la seguente 
motivazione: «Per la tenacia che lo avvince alla fatica nobilissima dei campi; per 
l’esemplare condotta nella famiglia e nella società; per il benessere che apporta a sé 
e al Paese».
Si spense in via Campo S. Maria il 23 giugno 1995 tra l’accorato dolore collettivo del 
popolo sammichelese, fiero di aver avuto “questo Padre”.

He was born on 8 October 1902 in S. Michele di Serino (AV) from Pasquale and Maria 
Cimminiello. Since he was a child he showed an early aptitude for the most demanding 
agricultural jobs.
In June 1922 he enlisted in the Guardia di Finanza Corps, serving until June 1928 at 
the Legions of Cagliari, Rome and Naples; he was forced to leave to help the family in 
the cultivation of the fields, being the father Pasquale again emigrated to the United 
States where he had worked for three years in search of better luck. In December 
1928 he contracted marriage with Carmela Vigorita, with whom he had six children: 
Pasquale, Antonio, Maria, Giovanna, Alba and Celestino.
The world economic crisis that had also affected Italy convinced him in 1933, with a 
few other Sammichelesi, to go by bicycle to the Pontine Marshes, facing terrible 
conditions of life and work, where the fascist regime intended to transform those 
territories infested by malaria north of Terracina in arable and habitable lands.
He returned to San Michele, always by bicycle, every month, to find his wife with two 
children at an early age, covering about 430 kilometers between the round trip on the 
Avellino-Naples-Formia-Fondi-Terracina-Paludi Pontine route. So it happened for all 
thirteen months of his stay in those places, managing to save about two thousand lire. 
Even in extremely uncomfortable conditions, the farmer Salvatore Renzulli was able to 
offer proof of his mastery for all the works related to Mother Earth; in fact Mussolini, 
during one of his frequent inspections in the countryside, appreciated so much the 
work done by his team that he wanted to meet him personally to congratulate him and 
give him a pay bonus without delay.
In 1941 he was called to arms but placed on leave having a large family. He was 
mayor of S. Michele from December 1946 to May 1952, then continuing to be part of 
the municipal administrations for another twelve years. A man of strong intelligence, of 
great nobility of mind and strong character, he kept the commitments made with his 
very noble inauguration speech. He was characterized by kindness and availability 
towards all his fellow citizens, none excluded, who often turned to him for advice. It 
was for these rare qualities that the people of Sammichelese identified Salvatore 
Renzulli as the Mayor par excellence, giving him the name that then distinguished him 
throughout his life, "Salvatore 'or Sinnico".
In 1946 he was awarded a diploma of merit by the Steering Committee of the review 
"Roll of Honor of the Italian Industry and Agriculture of Reconstruction" with the 
following motivation: "For the tenacity that binds him to the noble effort of the fields; 
for the specimen conducted in the family and in society; for the well-being it brings to 
itself and to the country ".
He passed away in via Campo S. Maria on 23 June 1995 amid the sorrowful collective 
pain of the people of San Marino, proud of having had "this Father".
