King of Prussia Courier, The (PA) - Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Joseph J. Cirino Sr., formerly of King of Prussia, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 25, 2008,
surrounded by his loving family at home in Collegeville. He was 83.

Born in Philadelphia on April 7, 1925, he was a son of the late Dominico E. and the late Maria Michael
(DeMaio) Cirino.

He worked as a restaurant manager for the former Gatsby's in Narberth until his retirement in 1989. He also
worked for the U.S. Post Office for 10 years.

He was a member of Mother of Divine Providence Church in King of Prussia, the American Legion Post 901
in Jeffersonville and the Catholic War Veterans Post 1182.

Mr. Cirino was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant in the European Theater of
Operations. He was one of the most highly decorated World War II veterans in the tri-state area. Included in
his medals from the war were the Purple Heart for wounds received as a result of enemy action, a Silver
Star, a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster to the Silver Star for valor in action, a Bronze Star, the Combat Infantryman
Badge and two Battle Stars.

Mr. Cirino received the Silver Star as a staff sergeant for gallantry in action in Nuremberg, Germany on April
20, 1945. While investigating the second floor of a building, Sgt. Cirino encountered eight enemy soldiers
armed with machine pistols and rifles. Before the enemy could put their weapons into action, Sgt. Cirino
fired a round of shots, wounding two and forcing the others to surrender. As he was marching his prisoners
downstairs, four more of the enemy entered the building. Sgt. Cirino threw a hand grenade that wounded all
four of the enemy. He returned to his company with his prisoners.

He received the first Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster to the Silver Star for gallantry in action on April 20, 1945. After
clearing four buildings in the attack on Nuremberg, Sgt. Cirino deployed his squad into two houses. Seeing
20 German soldiers making their way to the back of one of the houses his squad was in, Sgt. Cirino moved
to the rear and opened fire with his submachine gun, killing four and wounding three.

Hearing the action outside, his squad opened fire from the windows and forced other enemy soldiers to
surrender. When two German soldiers tried to fire an anti-tank warhead into the house, Sgt. Cirino killed
them. During this action Sgt. Cirino was wounded but remained with his troops.

Mr. Cirino, of Company A, 157th Infantry Battalion, received his Bronze Star medal for meritorious service
from Jan. 25, 1945 to May 8, 1945 in France and Germany during World War II. Serving as squad leader
during this period, Sgt. Cirino consistently demonstrated outstanding courage, loyalty and sincere devotion
to duty in the accomplishment of assigned tasks, responding to any call for his services regardless of the
circumstances.

Mr. Cirino was a founding member of Los Mustachios, a charitable organization that benefited handicapped
children, and a founding member of the Brachial Plexus Palsy Foundation, a charitable organization that
benefits children with brachial-plexus injuries.

Surviving are his loving family including his wife, Roslyn N. (Leo) Cirino; four sons, Joseph J. Cirino Jr. and
