John R. Foley, a prominent real estate broker, with offices at 149
Broadway, died suddenly yesterday at Aiken, S.C., where he had arrived
only the previous day. His death followed a severe hemorrhage of the
Mr. Foley was 40 years old. He began his career in the office of his
father, who was also John R., the firm being John R. Foley & Son. Upon
the death of his father, Mr. Foley continued the business. For the last
few years Mr. Foley's brother has been associated with him under the
firm name of John R. & Oscar L. Foley. Besides being recognized as an
expert in real estate values in Manhattan, Mr. Foley had acted as
broker in many of the largest apartment house and business building
deals closed in this city in recent years. Since its organization he
had been actively identified with the Real Estate Board of Brokers.
Mr. Foley was at the time of his death Adjutant of the Sixty-ninth
Regiment, and prior to his connection with that organization had been a
member of the Seventh Regiment. He lived with his sister and brothers
at the San Remo Hotel. His funeral will take place on Friday at 10 A.M.
from the Church of the Holy Innocents, in Thirty-seventh Street, near

Kearney. Applies for stay of proceedings to pay alimony to wife, Helen
M. Foley, and to pay counsel fee. Her counsel: William Allan. She sued
for separation. Foley is a non-commissioned officer and treasurer of
Co. B, 7th Regiment. Mrs. Foley lives at 118 W 80th St., alleges that
her husband has treated her cruelly, and abandoned her and their two
children. He claims she uses intoxicants and becomes irresponsible, and
has ungovernable temper. She claims his income is 15 to 20k a year, he
dienies. Foley's petition denied, and her counsel plans to ask for
contempt of court.

NY Tribune 2 Jul 1896 on chroniclingamerica says she is awarded
alimony, gives marriage place, says he is 29, she is 25.
24 Jan 1896 NY Herald "John R Foley, a real estate agent, writes to the
HERALD that his wife is not the sister of Mrs. [Margaret] McCauley."
23 Jan 1896 article reports that Mrs. McCauley was arrested for passing
bad checks, claimed Mrs. Foley was her sister, but when a police
officer called, Mrs. Foley said that Mrs. McCauley was her step sister.
Later Mrs. Foley posted her bail. Apparently Mrs. McCauley went off the
deep end when her husband died and was brought home with no notice.
