The Reverend Charles F. Dougherty A retired priest of the Diocese of San Jose, died 
in the peace of the Lord on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 in Mountain View, California at 
the age of 73. Born on June 25, 1935 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Charles was one of 
three children of Leo Patrick Dougherty and Sara Marie Maguire. He had a brother, 
Paul, who died a few years ago and a sister, Joyce Ann Murray who lives in Ohio. He 
attended local Catholic schools in the Pittsburgh area and was graduated from 
Duquesne University. He attended graduate school at Arizona State U, Dayton 
University and Seattle University. He was ordained a Holy Ghost Father in 1963. He 
devoted the early years of his priestly ministry to Catholic education by teaching at 
Gerard High School in Phoenix, AZ, Serra High School in San Mateo and Marin 
Catholic High School in Marin City, from 1963 to 1980. His parish assignments locally 
were as associate pastor at St. Albert the Great in Palo Alto, from 1980 to 1981, St. 
Joseph Parish in Mountain View, from 1981 to 1985, and St. John the Baptist Parish in 
Milpitas, from July 1 to September 1985. On October 1, 1985, he was appointed pastor 
of St. John the Baptist where he served for two terms until 1998. While at St. John the 
Baptist he opened St. John's School in 1987. After suffering from a heart attack, he 
went on leave for about a year, returning to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Palo Alto as 
associate pastor, from 1998 to 2000. In July 2000, he was appointed chaplain of the 
Newman Campus Ministry at San Jose State University where he served until 2003 
when he was appointed parochial vicar of the Church of the Ascension in Saratoga. 
Father Dougherty retired from active ministry on July 1, 2005. He is survived by his 
sister Mrs. Joyce Ann Murray of Piqua, Ohio, brother-in-law, Thomas Murray, sister-in-
law Julie Dougherty, five nieces and three nephews. The Services for Fr. Dougherty 
are as follows: Vigil - 7 p.m., Sunday, February 1, 2009; Funeral Mass - 10 a.m., 
Monday, February 2, 2009. Both services will be held at Church of the Ascension, 
12033 Miller Avenue, Saratoga, CA 95070-3358. Burial - Monday, February 2, 2009,

Father Charles Dougherty, retired priest, dies at 73

Father Charles Francis Dougherty, 73, retired priest of the Diocese of San Jose, died 
Jan. 27 in Mountain View. 
He was born June 25, 1935 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, one of three children of Leo 
Patrick Dougherty and Sara Marie Maguire. 
He attended St. Rosalia Parochial School in Pittsburgh, St. Mary Magdalene in 
Homestead and St. Bernard, in Lebanon, all in Pennsylvania.
He attended St. Canice High School in Pittsburgh and then enrolled in Duquesne 
University where he graduated with a B.A. degree in English literature and in social 
science.
In 1958, he entered the Congregation of the Holy Ghost Fathers at their novitiate in 
Connecticut. He finished his theology courses at St. Mary’s Seminary in Norwalk, 
Connecticut.
He continued to pursue graduate studies in English literature at Duquesne University, 
graduate education at Arizona State University, and theology at Dayton University, 
Dayton, Ohio. He received a Masters of Religious Education degree from Seattle 
University in Washington.
He was ordained a priest of the Congregation of the Holy Ghost, May 30, 1963 and 
was assigned to teach at Gerard High School in Phoenix, Arizona until 1971. 
When the Holy Ghost Fathers decided to concentrate on their original apostolate 
which was the African missions, they withdrew from parish and school apostolates. 
Father Dougherty applied to teach at Serra High School in San Mateo where he also 
served as chairman of the religion department.
He served in the Archdiocese of San Francisco as a member of the faculty at Serra 
High School from 1971 to 1978 and at Marin Catholic High School from 1978 to 1980.
In the Archdiocese he was assigned to St. Albert theGreat in Palo Alto where he was 
an associate pastor from 1980 to 1981 when the Diocese of San Jose was created.
In June 1981, Bishop Pierre DuMaine appointed Father Dougherty associate pastor of 
St. Joseph Parish in Mountain View where he served until 1985. Following 
incardination into the Diocese of San Jose in 1984, he was appointed associate 
pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Milpitas in July 1985.
In 1985, Father Dougherty was appointed pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish where 
he served for two terms until 1998. While there he initiated St. John School in 1987.
After a leave of absence due to illness, he was assigned as parochial vicar of St. 
Thomas Aquinas Parish in Palo Alto from November 1998 to June 2000.
In July 2000, he was appointed chaplain of the Newman Campus Ministry at San Jose 
State University where he served until 2003 when he was appointed parochial vicar of 
the Church of the Ascension in Saratoga.
Father Dougherty retired from active ministry July 1, 2005.
Predeceased by his brother Paul, he is survived by his sister, Mrs. Joyce Ann Murray 
of Piqua, Ohio, brother-in-law Thomas Murray, sister-in-law Julie Dougherty, five 
nieces and three nephews.
His vigil took place on Feb. 1; funeral Mass on Feb. 2, both at Church of the 
Ascension, Saratoga. Burial took place Feb. 2 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Los Altos.
