Notes
See new info in maule3.ged entry for him and Anne
Death based on fact that in 1900 census Annie (Frances Ann) gives length of marriage
as 50 years. wrong .. marriage must be in 1850 .. could it be his second and that
would explain Parnell? But it shows as Parrott in BMD and as alternative in
familysearch record of the marriage in 1845.
Phila Death Record on genealogybank.com gives b year est 1829, England, age 52, d
4 Jul 1881, bur 6 Jul 1881 New Cathedral Cemetery, salesman, 24th Ward, 418
Douglas St.
birth in England per 1900 census living with George and Mary Foley.
Says b Sept 1825 age 74, married 50 years, 7 chi, 5 living spelled O'Brien (but death
cert says he is 52 in 1881, s b 1829. If so, then 1845 marriage isn't his??)
BMD also has a record for a Gerrard O'Brien marriage in 2d qtr 1857 in Manchester,
but the only people on the page are a John Graham and Elizabeth Hardcastle. Image
is not available. It is vol. 8d page 633, nothing helpful on page 633 or 634. And there
is no record for a Wainhouse in 2d qtr 1857
Figured it out: Frances O'Brien died Oct Nov Dec 1853 in Bolton, Manchester, per
BMD.
Per English Birth records, in Jan Feb Mar 1862 a Gerrard Joseph O'Brien was reported
as born in Barton Upon Irwell (1850-1934) in Lancashire. Their child, and one of the
two who is not alive by 1900? Yes, because he is then reported dead in Apr May Jun
1865, district Manchester (so they had moved in teh meantime)
found him in 1870 NJ census on ancestry.com, in Camden as fits story under notes for
Mary O'Bryan. Spelled as O'Brien in census. He shown as age 40, Frances as 42.
VERY INTERESTING!!! She 17, he 15 at marriage!!!!
He is an agent for an oil company
Their children: Joseph age 12 (b 1857), Mary F age 9 (b 1860), Terresa age 5 (b
1864), Agnes age 2 (b 1867), and Elizabeth 4 mos (b Feb 1870).
Living with the family is Michael Cristy a druggist, age 23. All born England except
Elizabeth who is b NJ
Arrived in Philadelphia in 1868 (not 1866 as reported by Virginia Foley Baker). Listed
in an old immigration list (see ancestry.com). No otherinfo. It's in US Work Projects
Admin, Index to Records of Aliens' Declarations of Intention and/or Oaths of
Allegiance, 1789-1880, in US Circuit Court, US Dist Court, Supreme Ct of Pa, Quarter
Sessions Ct, Ct of Common Pleas, Phil. Project No. 20837 Harrisburg, Pa Historical
Commission 1940 25 vols in 11. Vol. 9, Letter O 88p, on page 6. Hmm
maybe he arrived in 1866 and declared in 1868????
Found arrival of Annie age 29, Mary age 8, Theresa, 3, Agnes 4 mos Nov 1868 in the
Aleppo, arrived Boston. Fits Great Aunt Virginia's phone account of years ago.
In 1880 census, living in Phila (ward 24, district 484, 418 Douglas St.). Same children.
Joseph is now 22 and an insurance clerk. Mary F is a dressmaker. Theresa F or P,
Agnes A, Elizabeth A. I'm guessing the A is for Ann. Gerrard is a salesman for an ice
company.
In 1861 England census, he is living in Barton upon Irwell. 213 Canal Bank, parish of
Eccles, spelled O'Brian, he is a yarn agent. Age 31, married to Annie age 32, children
Joseph, age 2, Mary Frances age 4 months, father John, age 80. and servant Frances
Mary White, age 35.
Can't read occupation fro father. Looks like N. K. something and occ. ... no known
occ? (OCt 2006: says N.K. no occ) Gerrard born in Bolton, Lancashire, wife and
children born in Manchester.
Also shows in BMD Index for 1862 as registered, Barton upon Irewll, Lancashire. vol
8c page 5 Again in 1865, but now in Manchester. And in 1864 in Manchester as
Gerard O'Brian
1851 census cannot find him or father. I find a Jerry O'Bryan, servant, age 21,
Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, a cowboy on a ranch, born in Ireland but a British subject.
Other than birthplace discrepancy, this would be him. Stoneleigh is very close to
Stretton, where James Judd lived (grandfather of Frances Ann Parnell) and to
Stivichall, where William Parnell lived (father of Frances Ann).
Oct 2006 update: cannot find anything in recently released 1841 UK census

Did she marry him? Per 1900 census in Phila Ward 26, at 1532 South Broad Street:
Hugh J Smith b Apr 1870, in Pa., parents b Pa., real estate broker, wife Agnes T or J

Joseph Aloysius O'Brien (1858-1929), claims Gerrard Joseph died in 1881! is source of
"Annie Wainhouse" as Gerrard's wife, has no death dates for his other children, cited
by Pat Riley's tree but in turn gives Pat Riley's tree
as the source.
Pat Riley is the granddaughter of Marie, dtr of Joseph. She has a cousin Linda and a
cousin PJ (both Rileys)
Joseph married Sarah Lynch, had children, then married her sister Mary Ellen Lynch.
Per Pat Cornder (PJ?) nicurn233@surfglobal.net, Joseph was a pioneer in marine
insurance business in Phila, dealt with Lloyds of London and became quite wealthy.
Passport applications indicate he crossed the Atlantic frequently. The Lansdowne Ave
house is gone.
Frederick J. Riley, whom I show as a boarder, married Marie and they live in Joseph's
house. Joseph and Marie were musically talented. Joseph left his money to his son
Arthur, to care for his siblings, but he chose not to do that. Joseph is Joseph Aloysius
O'Bryan/O'Brien
