Graduated at Harvard in 1818 (A.B.); Cambridge Divinity School, 1822; S.T.D., 1839. 
Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. "He was ordained in South 
Brookfield, Massachusetts, 30 Oct 1837, and later settled in Petersham, where he 
remained several years; but the greater portion of his life was spent in the service of 
his Alma Mater as tutor in the college and as a professor on two foundations in the 
Divinity School. He first attracted attention by his translation of the book of Job which 
was followed by versions of the Psalms and the Prophets. For more than twenty years, 
his was the leading mind in the Divinity School at Cambridge, and did more than any 
other to form the minds of the students, who will always cherish his name with love." 
(Extracts from "Reminiscences of a Nonagenarian.") He recognized the great 
advantage of a college education by giving each of his sons the same opportunities in 
that respect that he had enjoyed, and they graduated with credit from the same 
University that trained his master mind. The late Thomas B. Fox wrote of him as 
follows:- "Almost to the hour of his decease he was engaged in correcting, with 
sedulous care, the closing proof sheets of a translation of the New Testament. The 
strength and clearness of his mental powers, the candor and fearlessness of his moral 
nature, and generosity and justice of his liberality, will be acknowledged by all." Prof.
