Hastings Teacher Dies Tuesday at Pennoc k Hospital
Residents of the Hastings area were saddened this wee k when they learned of the 
death of Miss Emily Julia McElwa in, 61, 411 W. Center Street, who died at Pennock 
Hospita l about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. She had been hospitalized for on e day following a 
heart attack, but had not been teaching s ince the Christmas vacation.
Miss McElwain for 34 years and four months had bee n a member of the Hastings High 
School faculty as a languag e teacher. She had been teaching English and French.
Miss McElwain was a member of the Hastings Teachers Cl ub, the Barry and Michigan 
Education Associations and the F irst Church of Christ, Scientist.
She was born in Hastings on Feb. 3, 1903, the daughte r of Jason and Lois (Marshall) 
McElwain. She was graduate d from Hastings High School and earned her bachelor of 
art s degree at the University of Michigan.
She received her master's at Northwestern University a nd did graduate work at 
Boston University.
Miss McElwain taught about five years at Royal Oak bef ore returning to Hastings.
Her mother, Lois, is her only survivor.
Funeral services for Miss McElwain will be held at 2 p .m. Friday at the Leonard-
Osgood Funeral Home. Frank A. Sal isbury, C.S., is to officiate and burial will be in 
Riversi de Cemetery.
