Notes
1981 book:
In 1851, Edward was an assistant teacher at Westtown Friends School, Westtown,
Pa., listing his residence as Colerain, Ohio. Edward was a blacksmith. Later he was a
justice of the peace, and opened a store. He also worked as a tailor.
Edward left Virginia and went to Ohio, where after a stay in Belmont Co., he
lived in Chesterfield, Pennsville, and finally Athens. Edward lived in Salem, Ohio from
1844 to 1847. He lived in Short Creek, Ohio from 1847 to 1853. He moved to
Pennsville in 1853. In 1871, he took his family to Beaver Crossing, Neb. The account
of their westward trek is told in "A Prairie Schooner Princess", written in 1910 by
Edward's daughter-in-law, Mary (Finigan) Maule (see 1EE431). In Beaver Crossing, the
family lived in a sod house built partially in the ground. In a letter to Joshua Maule
(1E87), Edward tells of the suffering in Nebraska in 1878 and how things had
improved. He mentions that the family had lived in the ground until the prior spring
(1878). In a later letter (1886), written for him by his daughter Jane, Edward explains
that he is in a wheelchair and is very ill.
Anna Crew was a sister of James Crew who married Elizabeth Maule (1E62).
Jane was the first girl born in Beaver Crossing, Neb.
