Notes
1981 book:
John served in the Civil War. He was a flour merchant and lived in Phila., Pa.
Source: Miller-Robison Notes; Leeds Gen.; Rec. of Radnor MM; 1900 Pa. census;
1866 Phila. Dir.; NACWPR; Stratton-Maule Papers
1850 in Radnor, Delaware Co., Pa.
In 1860 census and in 1870 census he is in Philadelphia, living with his brother
Penrose (and his wife Louisa). In 1860 described as blacksmith, in 1870 as retired
from business, as is Penrose (at the ages of 33 and 28 respectively!!!!) Penrose
described as retired from feed business.
In 1860 he also shows up in Penn Twp., Morgan Co., Ohio with Edward and Hannah
(Penrose) Maule, and James Ecroyd Maule ... census taken at different times? Listed
as a clerk
Then in 1880 690 42d St, Phila., John S Maule shows up with wife Annie, and in the
feed business. Two stepchildren named Annie Knadler and Edward Knadler(ages 23,
22), gives Annie's age as 40 and his as 40 ... rounded? she b Pa.
In 1860 she is living in Valley, Chester Co., husband Jacob, ch Anna M, Mary,
Edward, Eliza, Joseph. In 1870 she is widow, in Phila.

Apparently fought in Civil War as a sergeant per 1890 veterans census. Oct 15 1861
until a date in 1865 I cannot read. Single at time of census [on re-look, doesn't say
that]. Living at 53d and Pine Sts.
Another record shows he enlisted from Koszta, Iowa on Oct 15 1861, and mustered
out 21 July 1865 at Louisville, Ky. Re-enlisted and re-mustered January 1, 1864.
Promoted First Corporal March 28, 1865; Fifth Sergeant May 17, 1865.
Key: His brother Jacob lived and died in Costa, Iowa. It is Koszta, and is 30 m from
Iowa City.
on google books: Report of the Adjutant General and Acting Quartermaster General
.... 13th infantry lists John S. Maule, age 24, Koszta Iowa, b Penn, 6th Cor, Oct 15
1861
IN 1900 census he and Anna are boarders, she is b Jan 1856 (he b 1834) married 11
years, (??) she has two children, he, none. THIS cannot be them, because she died in
1898. And the birth years are wrong.
1900 Phila census (via famsearch). He is b Mar 1837, widower, owns feed store. b Pa,

There is a Phila death cert for a Georgianna Fowler, widow, d 26 May 1913, Phila, age
59y8m25d, b 1 Sep 1853, Wisc, dtr of Henry R Stannard and Clariora A Babbock,
reside 23 N Furzier St, bur Mt Zion Cemetery 28 May 1913. So how do her children
end up with John S Maule, and she isn't there with them? In 1900, SHE is with her
husband in Phila, but their children are not with them. HUH? At bottom of next page,
E.W. Fowler is listed as son to James a Gilson; Fowler b Dec 1865 Pa, f b Ohio, m b
Wisc, and on next page is the John S Maule entry. Maule is at 5216 Haverford St,
Gilson 248 52d St (but E W listed as 19 Farra St), L B Fowler and wife Georginia at 19
Farra St., as are the people listed with John S Maule Looks like "Farra" . . . what a
mess by census taker. So perhaps census taker was squeezing this family into empty
lines at bottom of three consecutive pages
(handwriting and ink are different)

Nothing on 1910 census or 1920 census
14 May 1891 Phila Inquirer, in list of pension certificates issued

Buried with sister Hannah and her husband David Robison. Considering he is single in
1890 veterans census, perhaps he did not ever marry?
Yet that census gives his address as 53rd and Pine, nor, on second look, does it say
he is single.
Civil War pension index, he is listed as invalid app no. 810.682, certif 562.917, filed
12 July 1890, attye W.J. Wray
12 May 1919 Reading (Pa.) Times: "John S. Maule died suddenly at the age of 82 in
