JANE MAULE MARGARITZ
At the Wentworth Home, on South Church street, lives Mrs.
Jane Maule Margaritz, who was born of an old Chester county
family. on a farm in Oley township, Berks county, Pa., on December
3, 1827, and is now in her 92d year. She lived a large part of her
life on a farm in Juniata county, Pa., and always lived in the country
until 14 years ago, when she came to West Chester.
Her father died at 76, her mother at 88. Her father's father
and one of his sisters lived to be 92. Her father's mother also
died old.
Her general health is good, her hearing but little dull, her mind
is clear and her memory good, but her sight is very poor. She cannot
see to read or sew. She has no theory to account for her long life,
and has been sick a great deal. She worked hard on the farm. She
says that she did not allow her cares to worry her. One on}y needs
to talk with her to know that she is an intelligent, capable woman.
She feels that there is no satisfaction in living so long, and thus
outliving one's friends. She suggested that people who do not want
to live too long should not come to West Chester, for here they live
on till other people are tired of them.
I have often been impressed with the desirability of supplying
people whose sight has thus failed in their old age with some occupa-
tion either entertaining or useful. They are too old to learn to read
with their fingers, or to learn the usual occupations of the blind. It
must be feasible to invent or adapt some game, puzzles and simple
occupations for these lonely people. The societies for helping the
blind could not do a more useful thing than to find things to employ
the minds, hands and the failing sight of these deserving veterans of
life's battles.
