29 Nov 1856 Texas State Gazette: "Mr Walker Maul, of Lockhart, lectured in
Gonzalez last Monday night on Nicaraguan affairs. The object of his lectures, we are
told, was to raise men and means to aid Gen. Walker in his cause, but having met with
little or no success thus far he has abandoned the project. he requests us to say that
all moneys paid to his agents for that purpose will be immediately refunded -- Gonzalez
Inquire 22d inst. Mr. Maul must have since made a haul, as he informed us on the 21st
inst. that he had raised some fifty men, and he made a speech in Austin that night on
behalf of the Nicaraugua cause."

Wesley Fornell, on google books, recounting 1857 Texas connection with Nicaragua,
"Colonel Crawford's First Company, the initial unit of a new recruiting effort by this
officer, was scheduled to form in Houston under Captain Walker Maul on March 20th
before proceeding to Galveston on the 21st to join with Crawford's Second Company."
1856 on the Tax Rolls of Caldwell Co., Tex., per Texas Co. Tax Rolls on ancestry
13 Dec 1856 Texas State Gazette (Austin) reports Capt. W. Maul cannot raise support
for Gen. Walker in Nicaragua and will "make a rise by going it alone first."
