THE EARLS OF PANMURE, SCOTLAND
The Maules of Panmure on Tayside in Scotland are able to trace their ancestry back to the Lords of Maule in France through Guarin b. c.1047, a younger son of Peter the third Lord of Maule. Sixteen generations later, Patrick born in 1585 was elevated to the Peerage of Scotland as Earl of Panmure and Lord Maule of Brechin and Navar on 02/08/1646. The family tree for the period from the early French family down to 1411 in Scotland can be found on Jim's
James, the grandson of the 1st. Earl, and 4th Earl of Panmure was attainted after the 1715 uprising. He died in 1723 without taking the oath of allegiance to the crown, so the titles became extinct.
William, the nephew of James the 4th. Earl, was a Lieutenant-General who, for his services, was created 1st. Earl of Panmure of Forth in the county of Wexford and Viscount Maule of Whitechurch in the county of Waterford in the Peerage of Ireland in 1743. He died without heirs and these titles also became extinct in 1782.
